What is the format of the TRUE Advisor assessment?
It is a timed online exam that consists of 75 questions. The exam includes a 10-minute instructions section, an 80-minute exam items section, then a 5-minute survey. You must pass the assessment with a score of 77 percent or higher to receive the certificate. You may not pause, exit, or restart the assessment. You will be permitted a maximum of two opportunities to take and pass the assessment. The assessment includes both scored and unscored items. All items are delivered randomly throughout the assessment and candidates are not informed of an item’s status, so candidates should respond to all the items on the assessment. Unscored items are used to gather performance data to inform whether the item should be scored on future assessments.
What is the estimated time for completing the online course?
The online course may take up to 6.5 hours to complete as you complete the activities, download templates, and take notes. Your progress will be saved as you work, so you may exit the course at any time to resume where you last stopped.
How many questions need to be answered correctly to pass the TRUE Advisor exam?
In order to pass the TRUE Advisor assessment, you must earn a score of 77 percent or higher within the 95-minute time limit. The assessment must be completed in one sitting. You cannot pause the assessment and come back to it. If you do not achieve a passing score within the allotted time, you must retake the assessment.
Can I print copies of the resource documents from the online course?
Yes, you may print the downloadable resource documents.
Is the exam open book?
No, the assessment is closed book and is intended to assess whether the learning objectives have been met.
During the course, can I move back and forth at will, depending on how I want/need to review the course?

How long do I have access to the online course of the TRUE Advisor certificate program?
You will have 180 days from registration to access the online course and pass the assessment. If you do not pass the assessment (you are given two attempts) within the 180-day period, you will need to re-register for the course. Upon successful completion of the assessment, you will have access to the course modules until the end of your certificate term.
What if I do not pass the TRUE Advisor assessment? When can I retake the TRUE Advisor assessment?
You will have two opportunities to pass the assessment. If your first attempt is unsuccessful, you will need to wait 24 hours before re-taking the assessment. If you do not pass the assessment within these two opportunities within your 180-day registration period, you will be required to register for the certificate program again.
How do I find the TRUE-related USGBC courses listed in the resource document?
The resource document from the TRUE online course lists “USGBC Continuing Education” related to the content in several of the modules. Because direct hyperlinks to USGBC courses can change frequently, the resource document instead links to a list of courses related to the TRUE rating system and zero waste topics. The resource document states the title of the relevant course, which you can search for in this list.
For example, a resource for Module 3 is the course “Introduction to TRUE.” The resource document links to USGBC’s TRUE courses, where you can search for and access the “Introduction to TRUE” course.
Do I need to take any of the USGBC courses listed in the resource document in order to become a TRUE Advisor?
No. The courses listed in the resource document are only for the purposes of continuing education for those interested in learning more after completing the TRUE Advisor course modules.
The only materials that a candidate must complete in order to become a TRUE Advisor are the TRUE Advisor course modules, and the assessment at the end of the course modules.
What version of the TRUE Rating System does the content of the TRUE Advisor certificate program reference?
GBCI maintains and regularly updates the TRUE Rating System to keep pace with zero waste innovations and best practices. The content of the TRUE Advisor course modules and assessment is aligned with the June 2020 version of the TRUE Rating System.
I am being asked for a Keycode in order to launch the assessment. Where can I find this code?
Each TRUE Advisor candidate is assigned a Keycode by the system when they take their assessment, but it is not shared with the candidate. Instead, this Keycode will automatically be filled in on the screen before you launch the assessment, using dots instead of visible characters (like a hidden password). Do not click on, delete, or alter this code in any way or your TRUE Advisor assessment will not be able to launch.
