Where can I find a list of EDGE technical updates and User Guides?
Technical updates and User Guides can be found on the EDGE Buildings website.
How is the EDGE Baseline created, or against what baseline are the energy savings projected?
For the base case design, EDGE relies on information from typical building practices and national building performance codes, where enforced. For heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in commercial buildings, the basecase under EDGE version 3 relies on specifications from ASHRAE 90.1-2016. EDGE Baseline and improved cases also take into consideration the climatic conditions of project location, building typology and use, and building orientation. Refer to the EDGE User Guides for more details.
Where is the cost data in the EDGE App sourced from?
For the countries where there are local providers, IFC conducted research and sourced local cost data. For all other countries, global cost averages are used. Please refer to the EDGE Cost Model available on the EDGE Buildings website for more details.
Can I change the key assumptions for the base case if those are different in my country?
In most cases, users are expected to use the defaults in the key assumptions for the base case. If for some reason a different value other than the default is used, the project team must provide supporting documentation justifying the reason.
The city in which my project is located is not listed in the EDGE App. What should I do?
If the project city is not included in the EDGE drop-down list, select the city that is closest in terms of geography and climate, and manually enter the monthly climate values for the project location.
If any values are updated, the project team must submit evidence with a source for the values for EDGE certification compliance. The following weather data sources are acceptable:
- A Test Reference Year (TRY) if the building location is within 50 km of a TRY location; OR
- In the absence of local TRY weather data, an actual year of recorded weather data from a location within 50 km of the building location; OR
- In the absence of TRY or actual weather data within 50 km, interpolated data based upon three points within 250 km of the building location.
- Weather data can be obtained using sources such as Meteonorm or Weather Analytics.
IFC is continually adding additional cities. Feel free to provide feedback to IFC by emailing edge@ifc.org.
I see a number of materials that are typically used in my country are not listed in the EDGE App. Can they be added?
IFC is responsible for EDGE App development. Please provide them feedback by emailing edge@ifc.org. They may include additional materials in future updates to the App.
How does a building’s shape influence the energy savings in the EDGE App?
The design parameters (such as size and geometric shape) and the specifications (such as property of the glazing or cooling equipment) greatly influence the final energy performance of a building. Whether a building can optimize passive heating and cooling is dependent upon its site orientation. For residential projects and hotels, the building orientation is assumed as the average of 8 directions (i.e., omnidirectional). EDGE incorporates its own calculation model for orientation in non-residential buildings such as offices, retail, and hospitals where designers have a greater chance of controlling the building’s orientation and reducing excessive solar heat gain.
Can the EDGE App be used offline?
No, the EDGE App is only available online.
How many subprojects should I create for my multiphase residential project located on a single site?
At the Design Stage one subproject should be created for each unit type.
Following the awarding of Preliminary Certification, the units field in the subprojects should be modified and additional subprojects should be created so that there is one subproject for each unit type, for each construction completion period.

How do I claim embodied carbon for a material not listed within the EDGE App?
The EDGE App includes a “customized materials” option for most Materials Efficiency Measures. Utilize this option to claim embodied carbon for materials not listed within the EDGE App. Note that to claim embodied carbon, the material must be verified according to ISO 14067, or the material's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) must be provided.
